Mystery Boat People Bajo, Sulawesi Island

On the island of Sulawesi there Bajo indigenous communities living on the boat, called Seanomade. First, they fully live on the boat and only occasionally stopped at the island to get the water clean and sell fish. The last ten years, the boat people already resettled to the mainland. Later, some fishermen in Kolaka and Bombana look back Bajo Seanomade presence.

The existence of this Seanomade Bajo tribe, said to be in the village in the south of the island Dongkala Kabaena. In the village Kaudani, there Bajo settlements that have been living on the mainland, they were formerly Bajo Seanomade. They occupy the buildings erected by the local government.

There is a community of Bajo tribe who lived and live on a boat in the area Dongkala called Bajo Papongka group, they can live for weeks on a boat in the middle of the sea. Besides Papongka group, there is still the other 3 groups each group Lilibu Bajo, the Sakai and the Lame. The four groups are distinguished Bajo their habit of going to sea, each different.

Each group Bajo, are:
  • Bajo Bajo Lilibu, are living on land and at sea are usually only one or two days.
  • Bajo Papongka, also live on the mainland, but they could be in the sea to catch fish for a week to two weeks.
  • Bajo Sakai, could survive a month to two months at sea with the work to other provinces.
  • Lame Bajo, which could be many months at sea to catch fish.
  • Bajo Seanomade, surf in the sea, it is difficult known to exist, because it does not settle in the region.

The story of human Bajo boats, until now there are still living on the boat. They are reluctant to land. Bajo special Seanomade bring their entire families to live and carry out all the activities on the boat. Their place was thatched roof shelter on a boat called Soppe.
